Product information

Avamys Nasal Spray contains fluticasone furoate, a corticosteroid medicine used inside the nose to treat symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Allergic rhinitis can be seasonal, such as hay fever caused by pollen, or year-round, such as allergy to house dust mites, animals or mould.

How to use

Use Avamys exactly as directed by your pharmacist, prescriber or the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.

Avamys is used in the nose only. It is usually used once daily, ideally at the same time each day.

For adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over, the usual starting dose is two sprays into each nostril once daily. Once symptoms are controlled, the dose may be reduced to one spray into each nostril once daily. Your clinician will confirm the correct dose for you.

Shake the spray well before use. If the spray is new, has not been used for 30 days or more, or the cap has been left off for several days, it may need to be primed before use.

Before using the spray, gently blow your nose. Tilt your head slightly forward, place the nozzle into one nostril and point the nozzle slightly away from the centre of your nose. Press the side button firmly while breathing in through your nose, then breathe out through your mouth. Repeat as directed.

Avoid spraying into your eyes. If this happens, rinse your eyes with water.

Do not use more than directed. Using higher doses or using steroid nasal sprays for longer than advised may increase the risk of side effects.

Do not use Avamys at the same time as another steroid nasal spray unless a clinician has told you to.

If symptoms do not improve, worsen, or you need treatment for longer than expected, seek further clinical advice.

Main Ingredients

Avamys Nasal Spray contains fluticasone furoate as the active ingredient.

Each spray delivers 27.5 micrograms of fluticasone furoate.

Other ingredients include glucose anhydrous, dispersible cellulose, polysorbate 80, benzalkonium chloride, disodium edetate and purified water.

Avamys contains benzalkonium chloride. This may cause irritation or swelling inside the nose, especially with long-term use. Tell your pharmacist or prescriber if you feel discomfort when using the spray.

Side Effects & Cautions

Some people experience side effects while using Avamys. Very common side effects can include nosebleeds, particularly if used continuously for more than 6 weeks.

Common side effects can include nasal irritation, discomfort inside the nose, streaks of blood when blowing the nose, headache and shortness of breath.

Uncommon side effects can include pain, burning, soreness, dryness or irritation inside the nose.

Rare allergic reactions can occur. Seek urgent medical help if you develop wheezing, difficulty breathing, sudden weakness, collapse, swelling around the face, rash or redness after using Avamys.

Very rare side effects can include small holes in the nasal septum. Visual changes, blurred vision, glaucoma or cataracts have also been reported with steroid nasal sprays, particularly with long-term use.

Avamys is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it if you are allergic to fluticasone furoate or any ingredient in the spray.

Extra clinical review may be needed if you have frequent nosebleeds, nasal ulcers, nasal injury, recent nasal surgery, untreated nasal infection, glaucoma, cataracts, asthma, long-term steroid use, pregnancy or breastfeeding considerations, or symptoms that do not fit typical allergic rhinitis.

Tell your clinician about all medicines you take, including prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, supplements and herbal products. This is especially important if you use steroid tablets, steroid creams, asthma medicines, ritonavir, cobicistat, ketoconazole or other medicines that may increase steroid exposure.

Children using steroid nasal sprays for long periods may need growth monitoring. Do not use Avamys in children under 6 years old unless specifically advised by an appropriate clinician.

A note from our pharmacists. If symptoms persist, worsen or keep returning, speak to our pharmacist, your GP, or call NHS 111. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children. In an emergency call 999.
