The condition

Understanding weight management

Weight is shaped by far more than willpower. Genetics, hormones, sleep, stress, medicines, mental health and the environment around us all influence appetite and how the body stores energy. Carrying excess weight over time can raise the risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, joint problems and other conditions, which is why the NHS treats weight management as a clinical matter rather than a cosmetic one.

Sustainable results come from gradual, realistic changes with proper clinical oversight, not crash diets or quick fixes. A structured, prescriber-led service gives you an honest assessment of your health, a plan built around your life, and support to keep going. Speaking to a clinician is the first step.

Know the signs

Is this service right for you?

A weight management consultation may help if any of the following sound familiar. Your prescriber will assess your full health picture, including your BMI and medical history, before advising what is suitable.

  • You have tried diets before and the weight has returned
  • Your weight is affecting your energy, joints, sleep or confidence
  • A health professional has mentioned your weight or BMI
  • You want a structured, clinically guided plan rather than another fad

When to see a doctor

See your GP promptly if any of the following apply, as they need in-person assessment before any weight management programme.

  • Unexplained or unintentional weight loss
  • Symptoms of diabetes, such as increased thirst, tiredness or urinating more often
  • Chest pain or breathlessness during everyday activity
  • Your eating feels out of control, or you have a history of an eating disorder
  • Low mood that is affecting your daily life

Call 999 if you have chest pain with sweating, nausea or pain spreading to your arm or jaw. If you are struggling with your relationship with food, your GP can refer you to specialist support, and organisations such as Beat offer confidential help. For urgent advice that is not an emergency, call NHS 111.

A prescriber reviews your health history, BMI and goals, then discusses privately with you what is clinically suitable. The service is tailored to you, and the prescriber may advise that it is not appropriate.

Your plan, with ongoing support

You receive a personalised plan with regular check-ins from our pharmacy team. Where anything is prescribed as part of your plan, it is dispensed by Erdington Community Pharmacy and delivered discreetly in plain packaging.

We encourage you to let your GP know about your plan, so your medical records stay complete. You are never charged for anything that is not supplied, and this service is for adults aged 18 and over.

Evidence-based care

How prescriber-led weight management works

Evidence-based weight management starts with an honest clinical assessment, then builds gradual changes to eating patterns, activity and sleep that you can actually sustain. NHS guidance is clear that steady progress maintained over time beats rapid loss that rebounds, and that people do best with structured support and regular review rather than going it alone.

Prescriber oversight is what separates a clinical service from a diet plan. Before anything else, your prescriber screens your health properly.

  • A full review of your health history, BMI and any conditions you have
  • Checks against other medicines you take, so nothing clashes
  • An honest conversation about what is clinically suitable for you, held privately
  • Regular reviews as you progress, with your plan adjusted where needed

Where clinically appropriate, suitable options are discussed one to one during your consultation. UK rules do not allow prescription-only medicines to be advertised to the public, so we do not list or promote specific treatments on this page. Anything clinical is never guaranteed and is only ever provided where it is right for your health. That is exactly how a regulated service should work, and it is what keeps you safe.

Common questions

Weight management FAQs

How does an online weight management consultation work?
You complete a confidential online form covering your health history, lifestyle and goals. A UK-registered prescriber reviews it, discusses privately with you what is suitable, and builds a personalised plan. Our pharmacy team then supports you with regular check-ins. The service is for adults aged 18 and over.
Am I eligible for the service?
Eligibility is assessed individually by the prescriber, taking into account your BMI, health history, other medicines and any conditions you have. Some people will be advised that the service is not appropriate for them, and in some cases the right first step is a GP review instead. The consultation gives you an honest answer either way.
Why don't you list treatments or prices for medicines on this page?
UK advertising rules do not allow prescription-only medicines to be promoted to the public, and we follow them fully. Anything clinical is discussed one to one between you and the prescriber during your consultation, is never guaranteed, and is only provided where it is clinically appropriate for you.
How quickly will I lose weight?
Everyone is different, and we will not promise numbers. NHS guidance favours gradual, steady progress that you can maintain, because rapid loss tends to rebound. Your prescriber will help you set realistic expectations for your circumstances and review progress with you over time.
Will my GP find out?
Your consultation is confidential and handled in line with UK data protection law. We do encourage you to tell your GP about your plan so your medical records stay complete, and with your consent we can help with that. Keeping your GP informed is safer, particularly if you take other medicines.
Is this just another diet plan?
No. This is a prescriber-led clinical service. It starts with a proper health assessment rather than a meal sheet, addresses the factors behind weight such as sleep, stress and medicines, and comes with ongoing support from a GPhC-registered pharmacy team. The aim is sustainable change, not a quick fix.
What support do I get after the consultation?
You have regular check-ins with our pharmacy team, who review how your plan is going and adjust it where needed. You can contact the pharmacy by phone during opening hours, and your prescriber remains involved in any clinical decisions throughout. Support continues for as long as you use the service.
