The condition

Understanding erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) means having difficulty getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex. It affects men of all ages, though it becomes more common from the mid-forties onwards. Occasional difficulty is normal and rarely a cause for concern. When it happens regularly, it is worth taking seriously, both for your quality of life and because ED can sometimes signal an underlying condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes or reduced circulation.

Causes are often a mix of physical and psychological factors. Stress, anxiety, tiredness, alcohol and smoking all play a role, as can certain medicines. The good news is that ED is usually treatable, and speaking to a clinician is the first step.

Know the signs

Symptoms and when to seek help

Many men experience these occasionally. A pattern lasting several weeks or more is the point to seek advice.

  • Difficulty getting an erection
  • Difficulty keeping an erection during sex
  • Reduced interest in sex

When to see a doctor

See your GP promptly if you have ED alongside any of the following, as these need in-person assessment.

  • Chest pain, breathlessness or pain in the legs when walking
  • ED that started after a groin or spinal injury
  • Symptoms of diabetes, such as increased thirst or urinating more often
  • Low mood that is affecting your daily life

Call 999 if you have chest pain with sweating, nausea or pain spreading to your arm or jaw. An erection lasting more than 2 hours (priapism) is a medical emergency, so go to A&E. For urgent advice that is not an emergency, call NHS 111.

How it works at Medicosmetic

Fill out a short medical form

Answer a confidential set of health questions online. It takes a few minutes and can be done in private, at any time. We carry out identity checks to keep the service safe.

Choose your preferred treatment

Select the treatment option you would prefer. A UK-registered prescriber then reviews your form and approves it only if it is clinically appropriate. They may suggest an alternative or decline supply.

Delivered discreetly if approved

Once approved, your treatment is checked and dispensed by our pharmacist at Erdington Community Pharmacy, then posted in plain, unbranded packaging with tracking.

We encourage you to let your GP know about any treatment you receive, so your medical records stay complete. If treatment is declined, you are not charged for medicine that is not supplied.

Evidence-based options

Treatment approaches

Several evidence-based approaches exist for erectile dysfunction. The most widely used prescription medicines belong to a class called PDE5 inhibitors. These tablets improve blood flow to the penis when you are sexually aroused. Some are taken shortly before sex; others are taken daily at a lower dose. They do not work for everyone, and they are not suitable for men taking certain heart medicines, which is one reason a clinical review matters.

Beyond medicines, lifestyle changes can make a genuine difference, such as stopping smoking, reducing alcohol, exercising regularly and managing stress. Where anxiety or relationship factors are involved, talking therapies can help. Your prescriber will consider your overall health before recommending any option.

Compare your options

Treatment options and pricing

The main differences between prescription ED treatments are how quickly they work, how long they last, and how they are taken. The comparison below is factual information to help you choose a preferred option in your form. Your prescriber approves a treatment only if it is clinically appropriate for you, and may recommend an alternative.

Common questions

Erectile dysfunction FAQs

What causes erectile dysfunction?
ED usually has a mix of causes. Physical factors include reduced blood flow, high blood pressure, diabetes, hormonal changes and some medicines. Psychological factors include stress, anxiety and low mood. Lifestyle also matters, smoking, alcohol and lack of exercise all raise the risk. A clinician can help identify what is most likely in your case.
Can I get ED treatment online in the UK?
Yes, legitimately, through a registered online pharmacy service with prescriber review. At Medicosmetic you complete a confidential consultation, a UK-registered prescriber reviews it, and treatment is prescribed only if clinically appropriate. Always check a pharmacy's GPhC registration before using any online service.
Is erectile dysfunction normal as I get older?
ED becomes more common with age, but it is not something you simply have to accept. Many older men respond well to treatment and lifestyle changes. Because ED can also point to circulation or heart issues, new or worsening symptoms are always worth discussing with a clinician, whatever your age.
Do ED tablets work for everyone?
No treatment works for every man. PDE5 inhibitor tablets are effective for many, but results vary and they require sexual arousal to work. Some men need a different dose or type, and some are better served by addressing an underlying cause. Your prescriber will discuss realistic expectations with you.
Is the consultation really confidential?
Yes. Your consultation is reviewed only by our clinical team, your data is handled in line with UK data protection law, and deliveries arrive in plain packaging with no indication of the contents. We do encourage you to inform your GP about any treatment prescribed, so your records stay joined up.
What if the prescriber decides treatment isn't suitable?
Our prescribers only issue a prescription when it is clinically appropriate, that is what makes the service safe. If treatment is declined, we will explain why and signpost you to the right next step, which may be your GP. You will not be charged for medicine that is not supplied.
Can lifestyle changes improve ED?
Often, yes. Stopping smoking, cutting down alcohol, losing excess weight, exercising regularly and managing stress all support erectile function, and NHS guidance highlights these as first steps. Lifestyle changes work well alongside prescribed treatment too, and can improve results over time.
