Product information

Wegovy Injection is a prescription weight management medicine containing semaglutide. It is supplied as a pre-filled injection pen and is used once weekly for weight loss and weight maintenance where clinically appropriate.

How to use

Use Wegovy exactly as directed by your pharmacist, prescriber or the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.

Wegovy is injected once weekly under the skin. It can be injected into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. Do not inject into a vein or muscle.

Use Wegovy on the same day each week. It can be used with or without food. The injection day can be changed if needed, provided there is enough time between doses as advised in the patient leaflet.

Treatment usually starts at a low dose and is gradually increased to reduce the risk of stomach-related side effects.

The usual Wegovy dose schedule is:

Weeks 1 to 4: 0.25mg once weekly.

Weeks 5 to 8: 0.5mg once weekly.

Weeks 9 to 12: 1mg once weekly.

Weeks 13 to 16: 1.7mg once weekly.

Week 17 onwards: 2.4mg once weekly maintenance dose, where suitable.

Do not increase the dose faster than advised. If side effects are difficult to tolerate, your clinician may review the dose schedule.

Each Wegovy pen should be used exactly as instructed. Check the pen before use. Do not use it if the solution is cloudy, coloured or contains particles.

Wash your hands before use. Use a new needle for each injection if using the FlexTouch pen. Dispose of used needles safely in a sharps bin. Do not share your pen with anyone else.

If you miss a dose, follow the patient leaflet instructions or seek clinical advice. Do not use extra doses to make up for a missed injection.

Do not stop Wegovy without clinical advice. If treatment is stopped, appetite and weight may change, and your weight management plan should be reviewed.

Main Ingredients

Wegovy Injection contains semaglutide as the active ingredient. Other ingredients include disodium phosphate dihydrate, propylene glycol, phenol, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide and water for injections.

Wegovy contains less than 1 mmol sodium per dose, meaning it is essentially sodium-free.

Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your specific Wegovy pen before use.

Side Effects & Cautions

Some people experience side effects while using Wegovy. Very common side effects can include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain, feeling weak or tired, indigestion and upset stomach.

Common side effects can include dizziness, burping, wind, bloating, reflux, heartburn, gallstones, hair loss, injection site reactions, low blood sugar in people with diabetes, increased heart rate, and changes in taste or skin sensation.

Stomach-related side effects are more common when starting treatment or increasing the dose. They may improve as your body adjusts, but persistent or severe symptoms should be reviewed.

Wegovy can cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea, which may lead to dehydration. This is particularly important if you have kidney problems. Drink enough fluids and seek medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down or feel dehydrated.

Stop using Wegovy and seek urgent medical advice if you develop severe, persistent stomach pain, with or without vomiting. This may be a sign of pancreatitis, which can be serious.

Seek urgent medical help if you develop signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, breathing difficulty, wheezing, severe rash, dizziness, fainting or collapse.

Contact a clinician urgently if you notice sudden vision changes or rapidly worsening eyesight, especially if you have diabetes or diabetic eye disease.

Wegovy must not be used as a substitute for insulin. If you have diabetes and use insulin or a sulfonylurea, your risk of low blood sugar may be increased and your diabetes medicines may need review.

Wegovy may not be suitable if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gastrointestinal disease, delayed stomach emptying, gallbladder disease, diabetic eye disease, significant kidney problems, eating disorder history, or if you are due to have surgery under anaesthesia.

Do not use Wegovy if you are pregnant. If you plan to become pregnant, Wegovy should usually be stopped at least 2 months before trying to conceive. Wegovy should not be used while breastfeeding.

Tell your clinician about all medicines you take, including prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, supplements and herbal products. This is especially important if you take diabetes medicines, warfarin or other oral anticoagulants.

Wegovy is not suitable for everyone and should only be used where BMI, medical history and clinical assessment support treatment.
