Saxenda is a once-daily injection that contains liraglutide. It is used for weight management alongside healthy eating, reduced calorie intake and regular physical activity where clinically appropriate. Saxenda works by acting in a similar way to GLP-1, a natural hormone involved in appetite regulation. It can help you feel fuller and less hungry, which may support portion control and reduced food intake over time.

How to use

Saxenda is injected once daily under the skin, usually into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. It can be used at any time of day, with or without food, but should be used at around the same time each day.

Treatment usually starts at a lower dose and increases gradually over several weeks. This helps your body adjust and may reduce the chance of side effects. Saxenda is only supplied following an online consultation and clinical assessment to check suitability. You should use it exactly as advised and should not increase the dose faster than directed.

Main Ingredients

Saxenda contains liraglutide as the active ingredient. The other ingredients include disodium phosphate dihydrate, propylene glycol, phenol, hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide for pH adjustment, and water for injections. These help keep the medicine stable and suitable for injection.

Side Effects & Cautions

Some people experience side effects when starting Saxenda or when the dose is increased. Common side effects can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, reduced appetite, indigestion, stomach discomfort, dizziness and injection site reactions. These may improve as your body adjusts to the medicine.

Less common but more serious side effects can occur. Seek medical advice promptly if you experience severe or ongoing abdominal pain, especially if it spreads to your back, persistent vomiting, signs of dehydration, yellowing of the skin or eyes, symptoms of gallbladder problems, a racing heartbeat, or anything that concerns you.

Saxenda is not suitable for everyone. It may not be appropriate if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe stomach or gut problems, certain kidney or liver problems, severe heart failure, thyroid disease concerns or specific endocrine conditions. It should not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you have diabetes or take medicines that affect blood sugar, additional clinical review may be needed before treatment is considered.
