Product information

Proctosedyl Ointment is a rectal ointment used for short-term relief of symptoms associated with haemorrhoids, also known as piles, where clinically appropriate. It may help relieve pain, itching, irritation, soreness and discomfort around the anus or rectum.

How to use

Use Proctosedyl Ointment exactly as directed by your pharmacist, prescriber or the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.

Wash your hands before and after use. Gently clean and dry the affected area before applying the ointment. Apply a small amount to the painful or itchy area as directed.

If the ointment is being used internally, use the applicator nozzle supplied with the medicine if instructed to do so. Attach the nozzle to the tube, insert it gently into the rectum and apply the ointment as directed. Wash the applicator thoroughly after use.

Do not use more often or for longer than advised. Proctosedyl is generally intended for short-term use only. Using steroid-containing rectal treatments too frequently or for too long can increase the risk of local irritation, skin thinning or other side effects.

If symptoms do not improve, keep returning, become worse, or if bleeding continues, seek clinical advice. Rectal bleeding should not automatically be assumed to be haemorrhoids.

Do not share this medicine with anyone else, even if their symptoms appear similar.

Main Ingredients

Proctosedyl Ointment contains hydrocortisone and cinchocaine hydrochloride as active ingredients.

Hydrocortisone helps reduce inflammation, itching and swelling.

Cinchocaine hydrochloride helps numb the area and relieve pain and discomfort.

Some product leaflets also list framycetin sulphate and aesculin as active ingredients. Ingredients can vary by licensed product, pack or market, so always check the patient information leaflet supplied with your specific medicine.

Other ingredients may vary depending on the product supplied. Always read the patient information leaflet before use, especially if you have allergies or have previously reacted to rectal creams, ointments, local anaesthetics, antibiotics or steroid medicines.

Side Effects & Cautions

Some people may experience side effects while using Proctosedyl Ointment. Possible side effects can include local irritation, burning, itching, redness, rash, sensitivity, soreness or discomfort around the application area.

Stop using Proctosedyl and seek medical advice if you develop signs of an allergic reaction, worsening irritation, severe rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, or symptoms that feel serious or unusual for you.

Proctosedyl Ointment is not suitable for everyone. It should not be used if you are allergic to hydrocortisone, cinchocaine hydrochloride, local anaesthetics, or any other ingredient in the product. If your supplied product contains framycetin or aesculin, it should also be avoided if you are allergic to those ingredients.

Do not use Proctosedyl if you have an untreated infection in the affected area unless a clinician has specifically advised that it is appropriate. Steroid-containing treatments may worsen some infections or mask symptoms.

Extra clinical review may be needed if you have rectal bleeding, severe pain, a new lump, black stools, unexplained weight loss, a change in bowel habit, signs of infection, persistent symptoms, inflammatory bowel disease, recent rectal surgery, pregnancy or breastfeeding considerations, or if symptoms are unusual for you.

Seek medical advice promptly if you have heavy bleeding, persistent bleeding, black or tarry stools, severe rectal pain, fever, pus or discharge, unexplained weight loss, a change in bowel habit, or symptoms that do not improve with suitable treatment.

Proctosedyl should be used with caution if you are using other steroid medicines, other rectal treatments, or medicines that may affect bleeding risk. Always list all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, supplements and herbal products during your consultation.

This medicine is intended for short-term use. Do not use it repeatedly or for long periods without further clinical advice.
