Product information

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection that contains tirzepatide. It was developed to treat type 2 diabetes, and it can also support weight loss by helping to reduce appetite and keep you feeling fuller for longer. Mounjaro works by acting on two natural hormone pathways involved in hunger and blood sugar control. This can make it easier to manage cravings and reduce portion sizes, alongside healthy eating and regular activity.

How to use

Use Mounjaro exactly as directed by your pharmacist, prescriber or the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.

Mounjaro is injected once weekly under the skin. It can be injected into the abdomen, thigh or back of the upper arm. If injecting into the back of the upper arm, another person may need to help.

Use Mounjaro on the same day each week where possible. It can be used at any time of day, with or without food.

Treatment usually starts at a low dose and is gradually increased where clinically appropriate. The usual adult starting dose is 2.5mg once weekly for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, the dose is usually increased to 5mg once weekly.

Your clinician may then increase the dose in 2.5mg steps to 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg or 15mg once weekly if needed and suitable. Each dose step should usually be taken for at least 4 weeks before increasing.

Do not increase your dose unless your clinician has told you to. Do not use more than one dose each week unless specifically advised by a clinician.

Each Mounjaro KwikPen contains 4 fixed weekly doses. The pen is for single-patient use only and must not be shared, even if the needle has been changed.

Use a new needle for each injection. Do not store the pen with the needle attached. Dispose of used needles safely in a sharps bin.

Check the pen before use. Do not use it if the medicine is cloudy, discoloured, contains particles, has been frozen or if the pen is damaged.

If you miss a dose, follow the patient leaflet instructions or seek clinical advice. Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed injection.

If side effects are difficult to tolerate, or if you are not losing weight as expected, your treatment should be reviewed.

Main Ingredients

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide as the active ingredient.

Each 0.6ml dose contains the stated amount of tirzepatide.

Other ingredients include sodium phosphate dibasic heptahydrate, benzyl alcohol, glycerol, phenol, sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide, concentrated hydrochloric acid and water for injections.

Mounjaro contains less than 1 mmol sodium per dose, meaning it is essentially sodium-free.

Mounjaro contains benzyl alcohol, which may cause allergic reactions in some people. Extra caution may be needed if you have liver or kidney disease.

Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your specific Mounjaro pen before use.

Side Effects & Cautions

Some people experience side effects while using Mounjaro. Very common side effects can include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pain and constipation.

Common side effects can include indigestion, bloating, burping, wind, reflux, heartburn, dizziness, low blood pressure, tiredness, injection site reactions, allergic-type skin reactions, fast pulse, gallstones, hair loss, increased pancreatic enzymes, altered taste and changes in skin sensation.

Stomach-related side effects are more common when starting treatment or increasing the dose. They may improve over time, but persistent, severe or worsening symptoms should be reviewed.

Mounjaro can cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea, which may lead to dehydration. This is particularly important if you have kidney problems. Drink enough fluids and seek clinical advice if you cannot keep fluids down or feel dehydrated.

Stop using Mounjaro and seek urgent medical advice if you develop severe, persistent stomach pain, with or without nausea and vomiting. This may be a sign of acute pancreatitis, which can be serious.

Seek urgent medical help if you develop signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty swallowing, breathing difficulty, wheezing, fast heartbeat, severe rash, dizziness, fainting or collapse.

If you have diabetes and use insulin or a sulfonylurea, Mounjaro may increase the risk of low blood sugar. Your diabetes medicines may need review. Symptoms of low blood sugar can include sweating, shaking, hunger, headache, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, confusion, irritability and fast heartbeat.

Mounjaro may not be suitable if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe digestive problems, severe gastroparesis, diabetic eye disease, macular oedema, significant kidney problems, gallbladder disease, eating disorder history, or if you are due to have surgery under anaesthesia.

Do not use Mounjaro if you are pregnant. If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, seek clinical advice before using this medicine.

Women using oral contraceptives may need additional barrier contraception or a non-oral contraceptive method for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase, because Mounjaro may affect how oral contraceptives are absorbed.

If you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, speak to a clinician before using or continuing Mounjaro.

Tell your clinician about all medicines you take, including prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, supplements and herbal products. This is especially important if you take diabetes medicines, anticoagulants, oral contraceptives or medicines affected by delayed stomach emptying.

Mounjaro is not suitable for weight management in children or adolescents under 18 years.

Store Mounjaro in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C before use. Do not freeze. After first use, the pen can be stored unrefrigerated below 30°C for up to 30 days, then it must be discarded.
