Product information
Ibuprofen 400mg Tablets are anti-inflammatory pain relief tablets used for short-term relief of mild to moderate pain and inflammation where clinically appropriate. They contain ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, also known as an NSAID.
How to use
-
Take Ibuprofen 400mg Tablets exactly as directed by your pharmacist, prescriber or the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.
Ibuprofen is taken by mouth. Swallow the tablet with a glass of water, preferably with or after food to reduce the chance of stomach irritation.
For adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over, a common dose is one 400mg tablet up to three times daily where suitable. Leave at least 4 to 6 hours between doses. Do not take more than directed on the pack, leaflet or by your clinician.
Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time needed to control symptoms. Do not use ibuprofen for longer than advised without further medical advice.
Do not take ibuprofen with other NSAIDs, such as naproxen, diclofenac or high-dose aspirin, unless specifically advised by a clinician.
Avoid excessive alcohol while taking ibuprofen, as this may increase the risk of stomach irritation or bleeding.
If symptoms do not improve, worsen, keep returning, or are associated with fever, infection, swelling, severe pain or red flag symptoms, seek further clinical advice.
Main Ingredients
-
Ibuprofen 400mg Tablets contain ibuprofen as the active ingredient.
Each tablet contains ibuprofen 400mg.
Other ingredients vary depending on the manufacturer. They may include lactose monohydrate, maize starch, hypromellose, sodium starch glycolate, colloidal anhydrous silica, magnesium stearate, sucrose, talc, titanium dioxide, carnauba wax and colouring agents.
Some ibuprofen tablets may contain lactose, sucrose, sunset yellow or other colourings. If you have a sugar intolerance, colouring allergy, aspirin sensitivity or previous reactions to medicines, this should be reviewed before supply.
Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your specific medicine, as ingredients can vary between brands and manufacturers.
Side Effects & Cautions
Some people experience side effects while taking ibuprofen. Possible side effects can include indigestion, heartburn, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, wind, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, rash or fluid retention.
Ibuprofen can sometimes cause serious side effects, including stomach ulceration, stomach bleeding, kidney problems, worsening asthma, allergic reactions, raised blood pressure, heart problems or serious skin reactions.
Stop taking ibuprofen and seek urgent medical advice if you develop black or tarry stools, vomiting blood, severe stomach pain, chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, severe rash, blistering, sudden weakness, severe headache, vision changes or signs of a stroke.
Do not take Ibuprofen 400mg Tablets if you are allergic to ibuprofen, aspirin or other NSAIDs, or if you have previously had asthma, facial swelling, rash or breathing problems after taking these medicines.
Ibuprofen may not be suitable if you have or have had stomach ulcers, stomach bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease, severe heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver disease, asthma, blood clotting problems, lupus, previous stroke, dehydration, chickenpox, or if you are elderly.
Do not take ibuprofen in the last 3 months of pregnancy. If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding, you should seek clinical advice before using ibuprofen.
Tell your clinician about all medicines you take, including prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, supplements and herbal products. This is especially important if you take aspirin, anticoagulants such as warfarin, antiplatelet medicines, steroids, SSRIs, blood pressure tablets, diuretics, lithium, methotrexate, ciclosporin, tacrolimus, quinolone antibiotics or other anti-inflammatory medicines.
Ibuprofen may hide signs of infection such as fever and pain. If you take ibuprofen while you have an infection and your symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical advice without delay.
Suitability depends on your symptoms, age, medical history, current medicines, allergy history, asthma history, stomach ulcer risk, kidney function, heart health, blood pressure, pregnancy or breastfeeding status and clinical assessment. Medicine is supplied only where clinically appropriate.
