Product information

Fexofenadine is a non-drowsy antihistamine used to relieve hay fever and allergy symptoms where clinically appropriate. It may help with symptoms such as sneezing, itchy nose, runny nose, blocked nose, itchy eyes, red eyes and watery eyes.

How to use

Take fexofenadine exactly as directed by your pharmacist, prescriber or the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.

For hay fever, fexofenadine 120mg is usually taken once daily by adults and children aged 12 years and over, where suitable. Swallow the tablet whole with water.

Avoid taking fexofenadine with fruit juices such as grapefruit, orange or apple juice, as these may reduce how well the medicine works. Take it with water instead.

If you take indigestion remedies containing aluminium or magnesium, leave a gap of at least 2 hours between the indigestion remedy and fexofenadine, as they may affect absorption.

Do not take more than directed. Taking extra tablets is unlikely to improve symptom control and may increase the risk of side effects. If you take more than advised, or feel unwell after taking it, seek medical advice and take the packaging with you where possible.

If symptoms do not improve, worsen, or are associated with wheezing, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe eye pain, thick coloured nasal discharge or fever, seek further clinical advice.

Main Ingredients

Fexofenadine tablets contain fexofenadine hydrochloride as the active ingredient.

For hay fever, the usual tablet strength is fexofenadine hydrochloride 120mg.

Other ingredients vary depending on the manufacturer. They may include tablet core and coating ingredients such as microcrystalline cellulose, maize starch, croscarmellose sodium, povidone, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, titanium dioxide, macrogol and iron oxide colourings.

Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your specific medicine, especially if you have allergies or have been told you are intolerant to certain ingredients.

Side Effects & Cautions

Some people experience side effects while taking fexofenadine. Common side effects can include headache, feeling sleepy, feeling sick and dizziness.

Although fexofenadine is classed as non-drowsy, it can still make some people feel sleepy or dizzy. Do not drive, cycle, operate machinery or do tasks requiring alertness if you are affected.

Seek urgent medical advice if you develop signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, severe rash, fainting or collapse.

Fexofenadine is not suitable for everyone. Extra clinical review may be needed if you have kidney problems, liver problems, heart disease, epilepsy, are elderly, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are taking regular medicines.

Fexofenadine can interact with some medicines and products. Always list all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, supplements and herbal products during your consultation. This includes indigestion remedies, antibiotics, antifungals and medicines that may affect heart rhythm or kidney function.

Hay fever symptoms can overlap with colds, sinus infections, eye infections and other respiratory conditions. Seek further advice if symptoms are severe, one-sided, linked with pain, associated with fever, affect breathing, or do not improve with suitable treatment.

Suitability depends on your symptoms, age, medical history, current medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, kidney function, allergy history and clinical assessment. Medicine is supplied only where clinically appropriate.

A note from our pharmacists. If symptoms persist, worsen or keep returning, speak to our pharmacist, your GP, or call NHS 111. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children. In an emergency call 999.
